"The Flute of Shame" - punishment for bad musicianship:
The “flute of shame” is a medieval contraption inflicted upon bad musicians at a time when public humiliation was a ruler’s means of invoking fear in the people he controlled. Not only was it imposed upon displeasing musicians, but public performers in general who were deemed lewd, offensive, or bothersome. The device would be fitted around the subjects neck, with the fingers clamped tightly along the flute, where it could remain for days. (via Mark Wein)
wonder if there’s a corresponding or equivalant of the flute of shame in the east.
